Dusting Off The Guitar

More Music

I got a bit of time to upload some new songs and other ones which I have had the chance to edit. Been a while since I have had the time to do so and it feels good to revisit songs which I haven’t listened to since I recorded them.

So here they are. Ranging from original songs (and an original song / story about the Irish Famine) and a few cover songs too.

I hope you like them.

Rumours (original song about the Irish Famine)

Last Night (acoustic cover of The Strokes song)

I’ll Meet You There One Day (original song for Palestine)

There Won’t Be Many Coming Home (Roy Orbison cover)

Hello (Adele Cover)

Rust (original)

Rivers Run Clear (original)

Junior Chills – Dementia

Dementia

This is a song I wrote for my grandad who had dementia and who has subsequently  passed away a few years ago as a result. I hope the song does him justice…

Junior Chills – All In Black

All In Black

This, again, is another one of the shortest songs I have put together. I remember at the time of writing this song I was listening to Johnny Cash ‘Highwayman’ so I guess this is my attempt at a tribute to him. I didn’t even want to attempt to replicate Cash’ singing style (as I have tried before and I sound shite) so I thought I would sing a little differently from my usual style and see how it sounds. I quite like it as it is different…it is a very basic chord structure in the song but I think that is what I like about it. A few Johnny Cash nods are clearly evident in the song so have a listen and see what you think.

I hope you like it.

Junior Chills – Praying In The Stream

Praying In The Stream

I can’t seem to recall where the inspiration for this song came from. I think it was another case of strumming a few chords and the lyrics just followed suit. It’s a very simplistic song which I think focuses on changes in your life. I also the think the imagery is quite powerful…if you can imagine someone standing praying in a stream it would probably scare the shit out of you!

I hope you enjoy it

Junior Chills – Old F Chord

Old F Chord

I don’t think I have put up anything in quite a while so I intend to put up a few songs today since I have a bit of spare time. The first one is this song called Old F Chord from the album Eight New Roses. It is named this simply because I was using variations of the F Chord in the song. It is probably one of the shortest songs I have put together which is probably pretty refreshing seeing as the first song I put online was nearly 6 minutes :S It does sound different to the songs I usually put online so I hope that too is quite refreshing 😀

I hope you enjoy it.

‘Smell That Night’ -Original song by Junior Chills

Junior Chills – Smell That Night

‘Smell That Night’ is one of the eight songs from the album ‘Eight New Roses’. I have wrote previously about how this song was created and the influences for writing the song but I like it so much that I wanted to put it online. I didn’t realise that by creating and distributing an album through a site that I would have no control over how much people would have to buy it for. I think next time I will write a handful of songs and put them onto WordPress in one block as an album…that means they’ll be on YouTube and SoundCloud for free. Well this is the start of me doing that process for my first album…

I hope you like it as much as I do. It does sound different from my usual singing / playing  but I think that’s a good thing.

Let me know what you think 🙂

P.S. The video was randomly created by free online footage of World War One…although the song has absolutely nothing to do with WWI I thought it looked pretty different…

Junior Chills Album – Eight New Roses

After a while of preparation my first album is now finished and online. The songs which comprise the album were wrote quite quickly and I suppose I didn’t waste any time in recording the songs too (which was to my own detriment in one particular song). I suppose the first place I should start is with the title of the album. I didn’t make it up as a romantic album name but it was rather the combination of three records which were in my line of vision as I recorded the songs: The Hateful Eight soundtrack, Escape from New York soundtrack and Red Roses For Me, first album by The Pogues. I took a word from each and made the above title…it also was fitting since I had wrote 8 songs for the album too!!

1) Old F Chord – To be honest there isn’t much I can say about this song other than the style of play and convoluted lyrics differ from the other songs I have wrote. The title is based on the F chord shape which I play throughout the song…not very adventurous but I do like its difference.

2) Father Told Me – I wrote this song following the birth of my first child in June 2016. I think at the time I was positively overwhelmed by the birth and wanted to reflect on my father’s role with the birth of me in this song so it is both a song about my father and what I hope to aspire to as a father.

3) Smell That Night – One of my friends had a habit (maybe even a fetish haha) for commenting on how nice the night air smells in Ireland… I’m not sure if it was the smell of turf, home fires, air after rain or just a fresh smelling night air which appealed to him so much but it is something which I can appreciate and have tried to reflect this in the song. It is also a bit of a new departure for me as I tried to use my voice to sing in a different key while also harmonising at points.

4) Strange – I really like this song as I find it a very deep and meaningful song based on witnessed personal experiences. I sing about people only changing when certain things happen in their lives…for example: people only change their attitude about drinking / taking drugs when they don’t have money to buy them. They also don’t see the problem with indulging in one or the other when they have money to pay for them!! I suppose it is a message from me to the world that change is a good thing if you can do so in a positive way…it is a good thing as it can impact positively on those around you and is not a selfish action.

5) Bridie – Bridie is my attempt at a song about the Irish Famine in the 1840’s. I try to explore different aspects of the period in each verse from a person experiencing The Famine, sailing across the Atlantic Ocean in a coffin ship, trying to make a life for himself in New York and finally writing a letter back home about his experiences. It is also a song which I have dedicated to my great aunt Bridie who passed away a number of years ago…if anything she will always be immortalised in this song.

6) Autumn Leaves – I like this song for its simplicity and the way I sing the lyrics. I try to reflect back when I first started (attempted) to sing and I have noticed a massive improvement in confidence more than anything…this is a song about the futility of time and how quickly it can pass us by. I think somewhere before I commented on how when you were younger summer time seemed to last so long yet nowadays months fly by like autumn leaves caught in the wind.

7) Alone – I don’t know what influenced my mind at the time of writing this song but it delves into the whole idea of loneliness. It’s a reaction in a sense to being left at the side of the road or at the other side of the train tracks by yourself and culminates in a revelation at the end that no matter who you are, or where you are, or what you are doing you really are not alone.

8) Mermaid and The Man – This was the last song I wrote for the album and one which was wrote in the space of 30 minutes. To be perfectly honest the recording of this was rushed and which in hindsight I am not happy with (or at least the last 30 seconds of the song). I’ll need to remember for my next recordings to take my time and critically evaluate before putting it online. This song is a random look in to the life of a man who marries a mermaid. I think it is my attempt to replicate Christy Moore’s ‘Reel in The Flickering Light’ song where his story looks at a person who allows his sister to be married by a Johnny Long Legs / Daddy Long Legs insect…very random but an absolutely great song!!

So there it is. My first ever album recorded and one which I am very very proud of. If you get around to listening to the album remember that this was recorded in a room in my house…there has been no filters or add ons….it was simply me with my guitar, microphone, amp and lyrics.

I hope you can appreciate it at the very least for what it is – an original album reflecting on life experiences.

Smokers’ Eye

Junior Chills – Smokers’ Eye (original)

I haven’t been as active as I have wanted to be in the last few weeks due to on-going work within my home but as this work is now in the final stages I do have that extra bit of time (and quiet) to put songs back up.

This is a new song which I wrote two  nights ago…

I like to think of it as a song about people who like to fix things which are never broke and in the process break things which didn’t need fixed. I suppose it is also a reflection of drinking and smoking habits especially the ever lurking smokers’ eye which burns the retina out of your head…the next time you’re in a smoking area in a bar look out for the poor son-of-a-bitch that’s just been served a dose of smokers’ eye. Brutal!

The song also features a card game which I know of as ‘Jack Change It’. Laziness has got the better of me here so I will link you to Wikipedia to read about how the game is played if you are interested: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Change_It

Anyway. Here it is. I hope you like it!!

Junior Chills – Spoiler (original)

Junior Chills – Spoiler

Writing music and playing songs is a massive ‘de-stressing’ tool for me as well as being a great hobby. However watching movies is where my passion lies so I thought I would mix the two of these together and see what I could achieve.

Something which happens a lot of the time to me, especially on social media sites, is seeing spoilers about movies and television shows before I have had a chance to view them. This song is a satirical approach to this where I reveal the spoilers of famous movies and television shows which I have seen…I am not too sure if I will put up a spoiler alert before anyone views it…fuck it! I have had things spoiled too many times!! Time for a tiny bit of revenge!!

In particular I reveal a few things about:

The Predator

LOST

Usual Suspects

Sixth Sense

The Running Man

Game of Thrones

I have tried my best to create a music video for the song based on the lyrics and have put in clips from associated movies. I am particularly proud of adding in footage of Bishop and Ash from the Alien franchise when I sing about my milk being all sour…movie buffs will understand the connection!!

Anyway, here it is. My ‘Spoiler’ song and associated video.

I hope you like it.

Ale n’ Dreamboats

Ale n’ Dreamboats

For those of you that have watched the movie ‘This Is England’ by Shane Meadow’s there is a line, which you may or may not have overlooked, which is said by Woody to Combo when he has just returned home. Woody asks ‘who the fuck’s he?’ in relation to finding out who a random person in the room is. This line has fallen into common usage amongst me and my friends to question anyone who we don’t really know…and it only works if you say it in Woody’s accent! This was supposed to be the original title of the song.

Junior Chills – Woody

As with the majority of the songs I write, the music has come first. I got the chord progression wrote down for an introduction, verse, chorus and interlude and then played these chords until words came to me and fit relatively well to the music. When I broach a subject within my song, it is rare that I deviate from that subject, however, with ‘Ale n’ Dreamboats’ I did just that. I threw in ‘who the fuck’s he?’ ,without the ‘fuck’, and, fortunately, it fit with the song.

I think the song is quite self-explanatory. It is a story from the male perspective but it is not a story solely defined to males. Women experience the same story on equal amounts of times as men…and maybe I’ll write a follow up from the female perspective…like that shitty song that was out years and years ago where the guy and girl are slobbering to each other!!Haha

In regards to some of the lyrics which I have put into the song there are three or four which I particularly like.:

‘Another member of my team walks by, a secret rule by which we all abide’ is from a single person’s perspective and the whole idea of being on a night out knowing that there is other people out too who have been with the girl you have been with. However it’s a secret rule that you don’t actually talk to each other about it, you don’t even acknowledge each other but you both know that, in a way, you’re competing for the same person.

‘A text you sent had me feeling fine’. This looks more at before going on a night out and you’re texting a girl thinking that on that night out you will be able to hook up…sometimes it happens…maybe sometimes ‘another member of my team’ gets there instead…

‘He’s standing making fighting eyes at me’. Again this whole idea that if you get with somebody in somewhere like a bar, chances are there will be someone else there that doesn’t like the fact that you have pulled. Wee jealousy number maybe. It is because of this that they stare at you like they are going to beat the shit out of you…but sure…such is life…

I tried to link the video, which is pretty random, as best I could with the lyric. If you listen to the lyrics and watch the video you will be able to see the very random connections I have made. I have flipped the video, in parts, on its head compared to the lyrics as the second part of the video has very destructive, natural elements to it which pulls away from the lyrics as in the second part of the song  the lyrics suggest that the person gets the girl this time…this can be seen best in the last chorus where the two men are on the stairs with the lady and the next scene is of a flooded town. This reflects the one who is rejected by the woman. Maybe that’s what this song is about…rejection…the last scene sets the tone for the whole song though and for the ultimate message.

Hope.

Give it a watch and see what I mean.
