On The Lonesome Road (original album)

Junior Chills – On The Lonesome Road (original album)

With the onset of fatherhood and a return to education I haven’t had the time I once had to regularly update my WordPress page. However I have been endlessly writing new songs to keep ‘stress’ at bay. I find that writing my songs are the easiest part but finding time to record them is quite tedious. Nevertheless I got a few hours today to upload not just one song but a handful which I have put into a wee album.

The songs explore a lot of different topics well the usual ones that I explore anyway. Although I love playing all the songs I write, I particularly enjoy Daydreaming, Stress and Ireland Bound.

So check it out. Give it a listen to. Find out a song which sticks out for you and let me know. Any and all feedback is greatly received and appreciated.

Hope you enjoy it.

Junior Chills РWake Up World

Wake Up World

Following the 38 billion dollar military aid agreement between the US and Israel and the ongoing occupation and subjugation, discrimination and murder of Palestinians at the hands of the latter I decided to put a few thoughts into a new song called Wake Up World. I didn’t even try to hide the song behind an obscure title as I want to be as blunt and as forward as possible – Wake Up World. Wake up to what is happening in Palestine… can’t we see that Apartheid is here?

So this is the second of my protest songs about what is happening in Palestine right now.

I hope you like it.

Junior Chills – Old F Chord

Old F Chord

I don’t think I have put up anything in quite a while so I intend to put up a few songs today since I have a bit of spare time. The first one is this song called Old F Chord from the album Eight New Roses. It is named this simply because I was using variations of the F Chord in the song. It is probably one of the shortest songs I have put together which is probably pretty refreshing seeing as the first song I put online was nearly 6 minutes :S It does sound different to the songs I usually put online so I hope that too is quite refreshing ūüėÄ

I hope you enjoy it.

Junior Chills – Father Told Me

Father Told Me

‘Father Told Me’ was wrote following the birth of my first child in June 2016. At the time I was completely¬†overwhelmed by the birth and wanted to reflect on my own father‚Äôs role with the birth of me. So, with that in mind, it is both a song about my father and what I hope to achieve¬†in my new role as a father…

The song looks at different scenarios a person could face in their life such as remembering the first time they counted to ten, riding their bicycle, going to mass, and growing up. I don’t think I have posted lyrics to my song online before but here they are in case you want to take a wee read:

V. Can I get Amen if I’m not from this place? Blessed myself on Tuesday, on Friday I rest. Of all these things remember, my father told me so. Do the best you can son, in the boat you have to row.

V2. Counted one time to ten, thought I had it sussed. Remember feeling proud when my teacher did cuss. One night in mid December, my father told me so. Do the best you can son, in the boat you have to row.

V3. One day I rode my bike farther than I saw. The way my mum reacted I must have broke the law. When you’re young and tender, my father told me so. Do the best you can son, now in the boat you go.

V4. Wife she then gave birth. Family now to raise. Took like duck to water it never did feel strange. Their rock and their defender, my father told me so. Do the best you can son, in the boat you have to row.

V5. Now i’m reaching 80. Children have left home. Only got one fear son, and that’s to die alone. I’m old I’ll not surrender, my father told me so. Do the best you can son, in the boat you have to row.

I hope you like it.

‘Smell That Night’ -Original song by Junior Chills

Junior Chills – Smell That Night

‘Smell That Night’ is one of the eight songs from the album ‘Eight New Roses’. I have wrote previously about how this song was created and the influences for writing the song but I like it so much that I wanted to put it online. I didn’t realise that by creating and distributing an album through a site that I would have no control over how much people would have to buy it for. I think next time I will write a handful of songs and put them onto WordPress in one block as an album…that means they’ll be on YouTube and SoundCloud for free. Well this is the start of me doing that process for my first album…

I hope you like it as much as I do. It does sound different from my usual singing / playing ¬†but I think that’s a good thing.

Let me know what you think ūüôā

P.S. The video was randomly created by free online footage of World War One…although the song has absolutely nothing to do with WWI I thought it looked pretty different…

Junior Chills – Reaching (original)

Junior Chills – Reaching (original)

I wrote this song yesterday¬†and it took me approximately 5 minutes to complete. I think that it is because of this feat that I¬†really like the song. It’s not often you write the lyrics and music of a song in such a short space of time or at least that has been my experience of writing songs.

Simple chord progression which sounded nice and lyrics which followed suit quite quickly made the song come together as quickly too. I had received an email yesterday morning regarding an original video and song combo competition which I had been invited to enter. Nearly all the songs I put online are originals as to are the videos which I put together via stock footage. However the competition asks for the performer to be in the video playing the song…so I wrote a new song and I made a new video. Like each recording of my music, the video was raw recorded with only an inverted filter added to make it look a bit more different / funky!!

The gas mask in the video is a complete nod to Dead Mans Shoes by Shane Meadows. Great movie!! Watch it right now if you haven’t already seen it…and if you have, watch it again right now!!

For some reason within those five minutes of composing the song I was thinking about a small, seaside town in Ireland called Ballyhornan. This is a place which I have visited since I was a child and a place which I continue to go to whenever the weather picks up. It is a place where I have caught a million fish; a place where I have camped out under the stars; a place where I have watched my friends try to brave the arctic like waters at 2am (and fail); a place which evokes a multitude of different feelings and emotions which makes it a truly wonderful place.

I suppose this can be my song for Ballyhornan.

P.S. Thankfully none of my friends drowned that year…stupid fuckers!

Junior Chills – Blue Skies Ahead (original)

Blue Skies Ahead

I wrote this song as a reaction to cancer and the effects that it can have on a someone’s life. I write about ‘looking inside the place you own’ and ‘considering this house as your home’¬†and use it to look at cancer and how it makes its destructive home within a person. But it can take its¬†leave at anytime because I know¬†that I will not be stopping it from doing so.

I look at how people who have been diagnosed with cancer are sometimes given time frames as to¬† how long they have left to live¬†but there is no real certainty to it: I’ve got a month but maybe that’s a year. The age old question is that if you didn’t know how long you had left to live,¬†would the date¬†that you died match the secret diagnostic of the doctors?

I know that red sky at night can mean shepherds delight in that weather-wise the following day will be a good day. However red can also signify danger and this is what I latch onto here in the song. The person in the song can see blue skies ahead and will do whatever he can to prevent them from turning red. He is going to fight against the cancer and try to live for his family and himself.

Pretty morbid. Pretty relevant. Just something which had been playing on my mind the day I wrote this song two years ago. Just something which I still think about…

Hope you like it or can, at the very least, appreciate it.

Smokers’ Eye

Junior Chills – Smokers’ Eye (original)

I haven’t been as active as I have wanted to be in the last few weeks due to on-going work within my home but as this work is now in the final stages I do have that extra bit of time (and quiet) to put songs back up.

This is a new song which I wrote two¬† nights ago…

I like to think of it as a song about people who like to fix things which are never broke and in the process break things which didn’t need fixed. I suppose it is also a reflection of drinking and smoking habits especially the ever lurking smokers’ eye which burns the retina out of your head…the next time you’re in a smoking area in a bar look out for the poor son-of-a-bitch that’s just been served a dose of smokers’ eye. Brutal!

The song also features a card game which I know of as ‘Jack Change It’. Laziness has got the better of me here so I will link you to Wikipedia to read about how the game is played if you are interested: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Change_It

Anyway. Here it is. I hope you like it!!

Junior Chills – Now I Know (original)

Junior Chills ‚Äď Now I Know (original)

I think that the title ‚ÄėNow I Know‚Äô is ironic as now I know that my home recording set up just isn‚Äôt going to cut it. Trying to find a fine balance between voice and music so that one isn‚Äôt too over powering on the other is quite difficult when all you have is a microphone in the middle of the room. Maybe GarageBand would be able to help out here as I would be able to record both separately but I find the app very clunky and often confusing to use. At the beginning of the song you can hear (or can‚Äôt hear) that the music is drowning out the opening lyrics‚ĶI tried playing softer but it didn‚Äôt sound quite right. I also attempted to project my voice a little louder and this was the result of that. It is a work in progress I suppose‚Ķ

This song is a little different from what I usually put up. It is fast paced throughout which I think lends well to the lyrics which are sung quite lethargically. It is a song about knowledge and knowing which is reflected in the chorus:

The things that I should know,

Are the things that never rest,

Oh, darling now I know

Cos I can do them best

I think it’s the whole idea of when you should know something is always the time when you get asked about it so it’s best to be prepared and always know the things that you should know.

For the video I found free stock footage online which I thought lent itself well to the song, especially after I added a few filters to it. The song, for me, is quite dark and I wanted to reflect this in the video for the song. As such, the mirrored image of the woman in the video is quite disturbing ‚Ķthe complete unnatural element to the video is at times quite nauseating‚Ķis that a good thing? Probably not. But if there comes a time when you need to be sick but are unable to throw up, maybe stick on ‚ÄėNow I Know‚Äô and it might help your stomach to churn just a little bit quicker.

I hope you enjoy it.

Junior Chills – Sins of Ireland

Junior Chills – Sins of Ireland

I haven’t gave much thought into writing anything about this song if I’m honest but I’ll¬†run with it and see where it takes me.

If you have listened to my other songs you will know that the music sounds very similar to¬†the song ‘Hoops’…that’s because it is!! But this¬†song was wrote first and I couldn’t find any other music to fit in…actually,¬†I didn’t even try.¬†The song is called ‘Sins of Ireland’ but I think it is more of a satirical song which delves into some popular¬†misconceptions¬†about¬†the Irish – we are all alcoholics, we all know Irish dancing, we love gambling (but this could be more of a local stereotype where someone who loves gambling would be said to¬†put money on two flies racing up a wall).

Each verse looks at a different month of the year: May, July, September, December, February, March / April and tells a story about what happened in each month between a married couple.

I think that the line I love the most in the song is ‘In the rain of July lad, I decided to take a trip, I brought the wife to Cashel Rock, and I left her there in Tipp (Tipperary)’. Typically weather in July would be nice, maybe even warm. In Ireland the weather is, more times than not, a nice cool, cloudy, rainy constant…even during the summer.

St Patrick’s Day and the third day of Cheltenham…fuck it! Few pints and a few bets ūüėČ

Enjoy folks and remember to Tóg é go bog é
