I have been fairly quiet on this for a long time. Haven’t posted much of anything. Decided to go back to university to study so that alone coupled with part time work and full time fatherhood I don’t really have time to bless myself 😀
But I have been still writing and playing away in the background. I had a bit of spare time this morning so thought I would rustle this one up quickly and fire it online.
Junior Chills – On The Lonesome Road (original album)
With the onset of fatherhood and a return to education I haven’t had the time I once had to regularly update my WordPress page. However I have been endlessly writing new songs to keep ‘stress’ at bay. I find that writing my songs are the easiest part but finding time to record them is quite tedious. Nevertheless I got a few hours today to upload not just one song but a handful which I have put into a wee album.
The songs explore a lot of different topics well the usual ones that I explore anyway. Although I love playing all the songs I write, I particularly enjoy Daydreaming, Stress and Ireland Bound.
So check it out. Give it a listen to. Find out a song which sticks out for you and let me know. Any and all feedback is greatly received and appreciated.
I suppose it sounds more ominous than it actually is which is simply a short instrumental piece to introduce a few songs which I have wrote.
I would like to think that if I was savvy with garageband I would introduce a small drum beat and maybe some form of electric guitar riff to mirror what I play on the acoustic. However I am unable to import my own songs to garageband 😦 I can only create ones afresh…so for the meantime this will have to suffice!!
Following the 38 billion dollar military aid agreement between the US and Israel and the ongoing occupation and subjugation, discrimination and murder of Palestinians at the hands of the latter I decided to put a few thoughts into a new song called Wake Up World. I didn’t even try to hide the song behind an obscure title as I want to be as blunt and as forward as possible – Wake Up World. Wake up to what is happening in Palestine… can’t we see that Apartheid is here?
So this is the second of my protest songs about what is happening in Palestine right now.
This, again, is another one of the shortest songs I have put together. I remember at the time of writing this song I was listening to Johnny Cash ‘Highwayman’ so I guess this is my attempt at a tribute to him. I didn’t even want to attempt to replicate Cash’ singing style (as I have tried before and I sound shite) so I thought I would sing a little differently from my usual style and see how it sounds. I quite like it as it is different…it is a very basic chord structure in the song but I think that is what I like about it. A few Johnny Cash nods are clearly evident in the song so have a listen and see what you think.
I can’t seem to recall where the inspiration for this song came from. I think it was another case of strumming a few chords and the lyrics just followed suit. It’s a very simplistic song which I think focuses on changes in your life. I also the think the imagery is quite powerful…if you can imagine someone standing praying in a stream it would probably scare the shit out of you!
I don’t think I have put up anything in quite a while so I intend to put up a few songs today since I have a bit of spare time. The first one is this song called Old F Chord from the album Eight New Roses. It is named this simply because I was using variations of the F Chord in the song. It is probably one of the shortest songs I have put together which is probably pretty refreshing seeing as the first song I put online was nearly 6 minutes :S It does sound different to the songs I usually put online so I hope that too is quite refreshing 😀
‘Father Told Me’ was wrote following the birth of my first child in June 2016. At the time I was completely overwhelmed by the birth and wanted to reflect on my own father’s role with the birth of me. So, with that in mind, it is both a song about my father and what I hope to achieve in my new role as a father…
The song looks at different scenarios a person could face in their life such as remembering the first time they counted to ten, riding their bicycle, going to mass, and growing up. I don’t think I have posted lyrics to my song online before but here they are in case you want to take a wee read:
V. Can I get Amen if I’m not from this place? Blessed myself on Tuesday, on Friday I rest. Of all these things remember, my father told me so. Do the best you can son, in the boat you have to row.
V2. Counted one time to ten, thought I had it sussed. Remember feeling proud when my teacher did cuss. One night in mid December, my father told me so. Do the best you can son, in the boat you have to row.
V3. One day I rode my bike farther than I saw. The way my mum reacted I must have broke the law. When you’re young and tender, my father told me so. Do the best you can son, now in the boat you go.
V4. Wife she then gave birth. Family now to raise. Took like duck to water it never did feel strange. Their rock and their defender, my father told me so. Do the best you can son, in the boat you have to row.
V5. Now i’m reaching 80. Children have left home. Only got one fear son, and that’s to die alone. I’m old I’ll not surrender, my father told me so. Do the best you can son, in the boat you have to row.
‘Smell That Night’ is one of the eight songs from the album ‘Eight New Roses’. I have wrote previously about how this song was created and the influences for writing the song but I like it so much that I wanted to put it online. I didn’t realise that by creating and distributing an album through a site that I would have no control over how much people would have to buy it for. I think next time I will write a handful of songs and put them onto WordPress in one block as an album…that means they’ll be on YouTube and SoundCloud for free. Well this is the start of me doing that process for my first album…
I hope you like it as much as I do. It does sound different from my usual singing / playing but I think that’s a good thing.
Let me know what you think 🙂
P.S. The video was randomly created by free online footage of World War One…although the song has absolutely nothing to do with WWI I thought it looked pretty different…
