Very random title. Very random song. I think I have always been fascinated with the bullshit theory that fish have only a three second memory…I think this could have been spawned from a fishing trip where I caught a fish with a hook in the eye, took it off, threw it back in and then caught the same dumb ass mutilated fish again…which I then brought home because being Irish I thought there was an old proverb somewhere that said ‘Catch a fish and give it to the sea, catch it again and you’ll get cash money moneeeeee’…I made that up…
I don’t think that they do have three second memories. But do they dream? What if they did dream? Would a salmon dream about walking down the road…this reminds me of Billy Connolly’s joke about how Wildebeast don’t know that they’re wildebeasts because there are no mirrors in the Serengeti Plain…this salmon in the story doesn’t think he’s a fish…he thinks he’s one of those walking things dandering about on the shore line!!
Again it is just a wee song that I put together…I have never dreamt that I have been a salmon so it’s unrealistic that the salmon would dream of being us…why would they? Christ, it’s just a song!!
I think that the title ‘Now I Know’ is ironic as now I know that my home recording set up just isn’t going to cut it. Trying to find a fine balance between voice and music so that one isn’t too over powering on the other is quite difficult when all you have is a microphone in the middle of the room. Maybe GarageBand would be able to help out here as I would be able to record both separately but I find the app very clunky and often confusing to use. At the beginning of the song you can hear (or can’t hear) that the music is drowning out the opening lyrics…I tried playing softer but it didn’t sound quite right. I also attempted to project my voice a little louder and this was the result of that. It is a work in progress I suppose…
This song is a little different from what I usually put up. It is fast paced throughout which I think lends well to the lyrics which are sung quite lethargically. It is a song about knowledge and knowing which is reflected in the chorus:
The things that I should know,
Are the things that never rest,
Oh, darling now I know
Cos I can do them best
I think it’s the whole idea of when you should know something is always the time when you get asked about it so it’s best to be prepared and always know the things that you should know.
For the video I found free stock footage online which I thought lent itself well to the song, especially after I added a few filters to it. The song, for me, is quite dark and I wanted to reflect this in the video for the song. As such, the mirrored image of the woman in the video is quite disturbing …the complete unnatural element to the video is at times quite nauseating…is that a good thing? Probably not. But if there comes a time when you need to be sick but are unable to throw up, maybe stick on ‘Now I Know’ and it might help your stomach to churn just a little bit quicker.
Junior Chills – There Won’t Be Many Coming Home (Roy Orbison cover)
I first heard this song while watching The Hateful Eight (shame on me I suppose) and instantly loved it. I read a bit about the song and found that it was created for a film which Roy Orbison starred in called ‘The Fastest Guitar Alive’ which was set during the American Civil War. As such I felt that I could do a cover of the song and relate it to other periods of history which I have attempted to reflect in the video using:
The Hateful Eight: set during 1860’s – 1870’s
The High Plains Drifter: 1800’s
Cross of Iron: 1943
The Wild Bunch: 1913
Full Metal Jacket: 1950’s – 1970’s
Wee acoustic number of a fantastic song which I hope I haven’t ruined for anyone.
